James Franco, Best Supporting Actor? ‘Spring Breakers’ May Get Oscar Qualifying Run In December

James Franco Spring Breakers

Actor James Franco speaks onstage at the “Spring Breakers” press conference during the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival

Spring break forever, even in December. According to Showbiz 411 guru Roger Friedman, Harmony Korine’s “Spring Breakers” may get an end-of-year releaseto qualify the film and co-star James Franco for the 85th annual Academy Awards.

“Spring Breakers” debuted at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year before making waves at the Toronto International Film Festival. The consensus among critics was that the film is bonkers, with special praise being bestowed upon Franco for his over-the-top performance as a cornrows-wearing drug dealer named Alien. Noted Vulture’s Kyle Buchanan when the film screened in Toronto:

What Matthew McConaughey did for “Magic Mike,” Franco does for “Spring Breakers”: Each pushes their star power past parody as the debauched MC holding court over a motley crew of hard-bodied, in-too-deep young ones.

Per HuffPost Entertainment sister site Moviefone, Franco says some of the following lines in “Spring Breakers”:

“I straight hustle! I am a hustler.”

“Look at my shit! I am a f-ckin’ nightmare in this motherf-cker. I am the f-ckin’ Death Star!”

All of which is to say, Franco’s work in “Spring Breakers” is the type of brassy supporting performance that could get Academy notice. Unless, of course, McConaughey retains his summertime status as an Oscar contender for his aforementioned and similar work in “Magic Mike.” Other actors thought to be in contention for Best Supporting Actor include Philip Seymour Hoffman (“The Master”), Tommy Lee Jones (“Lincoln”), Robert De Niro (“Silver Linings Playbook”), Alan Arkin (“Argo”), John Goodman (“Argo”), William H. Macy (“The Sessions”) and perhaps Leonardo DiCaprio (“Django Unchained”) and Russell Crowe (“Les Miserables”), so the category is not without possibilities.

Johnny Depp has NOT died in a car crash, but hackers exploit rumours

Actor Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp attends the 2008 Oscars

Hollywood movie actor Johnny Depp, famous for his roles in Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow and Pirates of the Caribbean, became the unwitting star of an internet hoax which spread widely this weekend.

Innocent internet users were fooled by the hoax, spreading messages to their online friends that the popular film star, who lives in France with his partner Vanessa Paradis, had come to a tragic end at the side of a road in Bordeaux.

The bogus reports claimed that the 46-year-old actor had died in a drunken car crash, often linking to a webpage

Fake CNN webpage

Screenshot of the fake CNN webpage spread the false rumors of Johnny Depp’s death

which seemingly contained a CNN news report, including a photograph of the wreckage.

However, the webpage (despite appearances to the casual browser) wasn’t actually on CNN’s website at all.

Part of the report reads:

Johnny Depp’s car was found along side a road outside Bordeaux, France, with the guard rail embedded deep inside the car.

A tourist was driving down the road when he saw a car wreck alongside the road. He stepped out and tried to see if anyone was in there while his wife dialed the police for help.

To his dismay, he found the a body in the car among liquor bottles.

The police arrived at the scene shortly after and pulled out the body of the former actor, Johnny Depp.

Many people forwarded on messages about Depp’s death making “Johnny Depp RIP” a trending topic on Twitter, which helped to fuel the rumour and spread it even further and faster.

The only problem was, inevitably, that the people hadn’t checked their facts before passing on the news. Johnny Depp, I’m delighted to report, hasn’t died in a car crash.

Chris Pratt wants to weigh 300 pounds by November

chris pratt

“Parks and Recreations” actor Chris Pratt arrives at the Young Hollywood Awards

While Anna Faris is slimming down after the Aug. 25 birth of her son, Jack, the actress’ hilarious husband, Chris Pratt, is packing on the pounds! The “Parks and Recreation” actor, 33, has already gained 40 pounds since June in preparation for his role as a lawyer in the upcoming comedy “Starbuck.” The film centers around Vince Vaughn, 42, whose character learns he’s fathered 533 children through sperm donations.

“This is what 275 looks like,” Pratt tells Vulture while rubbing his belly. “All man right here.”

Pratt says he hopes to weigh 300 pounds by November. To do so, he’s been drinking “super gross but pretty tasty” weight gain shakes, in addition to eating at fast food restaurants. “I will hit a couple of burgers like it’s laced with crack cocaine,” he jokes. “Oooh, I love it.”One unfortunate side effect, Pratt admits, is that his energy is lower than ever. “If I just keep eating I can maintain a buzz, like a sugar food buzz. But if I’m in the background of a scene, I’m definitely sitting.”

Pratt is no stranger to modifying his body for a role: He toned up to play a baseball player in 2011’s “Moneyball.” “I just like to gain weight and lose weight,” he tells Vulture. “It’s a roller coaster. I just want to do this. I want to touch God.”

Actor Crowe gets lift after getting lost kayaking

Russell Crowe

A photo provided by the U.S. Coast Guard shows Russell Crowe, center, with Coast Guard petty officers Robert Swieciki, left, and Thomas Watson

Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe lost his way kayaking in the waters off New York’s Long Island and was picked up by a U.S. Coast Guard boat and ferried to a harbor, officials said Sunday.

The 48-year-old actor was kayaking with a friend and launched from Cold Spring Harbor Saturday afternoon on the Long Island Sound, according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Robert Swieciki. As it got dark, the two got lost and eventually headed for shore, beaching their kayaks in Huntington Bay, nearly 10 miles east from where they had set out.

The U.S. Coast Guard was patrolling the area, and heard Crowe call out to them from the shore around 10 p.m., Swieciki said. The “Gladiator” actor and his friend, who Swieciki didn’t recognize, paddled over to the boat. The Coast Guard officers pulled them up and, along with their kayaks, gave them a ride to Huntington Harbor.

“He just needed a little bit of help, he just got a little lost,” Swieciki said. “It wasn’t really a rescue, really, more of just giving someone a lift.”

Swieicki said no one was injured, and the two men were wearing life vests. He said the actor, who was grateful and friendly, seemed like he was a fairly experienced kayaker.

Crowe sent a Twitter message about 1:30 a.m. Sunday thanking the officers, and saying he was out on the water four and a half hours.

“Thanks to Seth and the boys from the US Coast Guard for guiding the way…4 hrs 30 mins, 7m(11.2km),” he wrote.

Crowe is on Long Island filming a new movie called “Noah” in Oyster Bay. The biblical epic is directed by Darren Aronofsky and scheduled for release in 2014.

Crowe won an Academy Award for best actor for his role as a Roman soldier called Maximus in “Gladiator.”
